I. Professional training

Teachers' training workshop

Place: EPA, Porto-Novo

Participants: 13 African professionals working in the area of cultural heritage, from 8 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Niger, Senegal).

Objectives:

  • to form a second generation of African trainers to the design and the animation of courses in the field of conservation, management and mediation of cultural heritage;
  • to diffuse recent teaching techniques and the specific didactic materials designed during the Generation 2 Project;
  • to reinforce the network of trainers able to support EPA, PMDA and other African institutions in their training programmes.

    Results:

  • qualified, autonomous heritage professionals capable of working alone or within a group of trainers;

  • heritage professionals capable of using and adapting available teaching resources in any given teaching situation; of creating new teaching materials;

  • a team of qualified and operational trainers for African training institutions.



    The scientific and cultural project

    Participants: 19 persons in charge of museums or related institutions and senior executives having already carried out projects for museums in Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Congo Brazzaville, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Togo.

    Objectives: to provide heads of heritage institutions with tools for the elaboration of a scientific and cultural project for their institution.



    6th Africa 2009 Regional Course

    Participants: 19 high level professionals (architects, curators, town planners, archaeologists, historians) from heritage institutions from 15 French-speaking African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Togo).

    Objectives: to gather African professionals working in the sector of cultural heritage and to sensitize them to the most important aspects related to the planning and the management of conservation activities in sub-Saharan Africa.



    Territories and heritage workshop: a sense of place

    Participants: 19 African professionals in charge of urban planning and environment, heads of rehabilitation projects from the French- and Portuguese-speaking countries of EPA's network.

    Objectives: to point out to environment and urban planning professionals the necessity to carry out intervention policies and to develop land planning policies which take into account the safeguarding and the promotion of the identity of African territories.

    Objectives: Study the modalities to implement the training programme and the use of the CampusCultura web site of the CNED.


    Stakes and perspectives of being on the World Heritage List

    Objectives:

  • Make mayors and town authorities acquainted with the procedures, advantages and obligations linked to the listing of Slave Route sites on the World Heritage List, in the context of decentralisation
  • Define local and global strategies which can enable towns to ensure the protection of sites for the well being of the local populations.

    Results:

  • A definition of the mechanisms of management of Slave Route sites on the local, regional and national levels
  • The conception of a common project for a communal decree for the protection and promotion of Slave Route sites
  • A better understanding by town authorities of the stakes of the promotion and enhancement of sites linked to the Slave Trade for the development of tourism.


    6th Africa 2009 Seminar for Directors

    Participants: 41 people, including 26 cultural heritage directors from French-, English- and Portuguese-speaking African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, South Africa, Gambia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Zambia, Zimbabwe).

    Objectives:

  • Analyse the applicability of the modules studied during the Africa 2009 course;
  • Give professionals from sub-Saharan Africa the opportunity of presenting immovable cultural heritage sites linked to the Slave Trade in their countries, and particularly show how theses sites are managed;
  • Identify the categories an typologies of sites linked to the Slave Trade (immovable and intangible);
  • Conceive an action plan which will help promote, conserve and control these sites which are sometimes cross-boarder sites.


    Colloquium: Assessment and perspectives of private museums in Africa

    Participants: 11 founders of private museums of sub-Saharan Africa.

    Objectives:

  • Analyse the current situation of private and community museums by identifying their strengths and limitations regarding their development in the African context
  • List the main needs of private museums, especially Museums of Woman, in the perspective of suggesting projects/programmes to be carried out in 2005-2007 in collaboration with the Ecole du Patrimoine Africain.

    Objectives:

  • pilot projet for the creation of a fund to help the poorer inhabitants of the district to rehabilitate and promote habitat with a strong cultural identity;
  • develop a sensitisation programme on the problem of cultural heritage in public primary schools of the historic district of Accron and Gbècon.

    Advisor of the Ministry of Environment, Habitat and Urban planning for the building of the new headquarters of the National Assembly

    Financed by: Ministry of Environment, Habitat and Urban planning of Benin

    Date: from October 17, 2003 to August 25, 2004

    Place: Porto-Novo, Benin

    Objective: Assist the Directorate of the lPSRPN (Programme spécial de réhabilitation de la ville de Porto-Novo) in the building project of the new headquarters of the National Assembly of Benin in Porto-Novo, so as to ensure that the project takes into account the safeguarding and the enhancement of cultural heritage of the town, and does not put at risk its application to the World Heritage List.

    Results:

  • Conception of a document containing prescriptions on the treatment of the heritage components of the area in which the building work will take place, with recommendations presenting aesthetical and functional requirements to which the site will have to answer.
  • Creation of a specific documentary service at EPA's resource centre.
  • Organisation of information meetings and guided visits at EPA and on the site, for the candidates to the competition and other people concerned
  • Organisation of workshops on heritage issues linked to the project and visits for the jury members of the competition
  • Participation in the competition deliberations.

    Académie des Fées (Academy of Fairies)

    Académie des Fées 2004 : puppet theater Date: launched on February 12, 2001

    Place: Porto-Novo

    Participants:

    • 1464 schoolchildren from 32 classes from 13 primary schools of three towns of Benin (Porto-Novo, Lokossa, Athiémé)
    • 21 secondary schoolchildren

    Objectives: to improve the quality of African children's lives (aged 6 to 14) by suggesting activities which develop their cultural and artistic sensitivity. This is essential for the preservation of the positive values of creativity and innovation.

    The theme for the year 2004 was "Educating children through tales".

    Results: the following activities were carried out using the selected tale:

  • Creation of puppets to act out the tale
  • Acting with the puppets and with the children
  • Creation of masks and costumes for actors
  • Training on storytelling
  • Creation of a calendar with drawings depicting scenes from the tale
  • Creation of Senguè (traditional purses) with drawings of characters from the tale.

  • Visit of Académie des Fées classes by academic authorities
  • Pedagogical tour of Académie des Fées teachers to another town of Benin
  • Training on storytelling : " Conte ! raconte " ("Story! tell!") with secondary school children.



    Exhibition " Porto-Novo : une ville des patrimoines "

  • introduce this exceptional but endangered cultural heritage to the inhabitants of the megalopolis of Cotonou, at 30 km of Porto-Novo;
  • inform the general public on the results of the study on the rehabilitation of the immovable cultural heritage of Porto-Novo carried out by EPA and EAMAU (Ecole africaine des métiers d'architecture et d'urbanisme) between 2001 and 2003.
