Surveys on the potentialities of museums as education centres for schools

1- First survey

The survey carried out in 1999 (40 questionnaires were distributed, 29 answers received from 17 French-and Portuguese-speaking African towns) shows that 90% of African primary school children do not go to their local museum.

For a total population of 17 800 635 inhabitants, 2 306 262 go to primary school.

2- Second survey

In order to develop a greater synergy between these two educational institutions and improve the educational offer of African museums to primary school children, a second survey took place from March 2001 to February 2002, in five countries (Burkina Faso, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Senegal).

Objectives

In order to identify "entry ways" to cultural education:

• collect and analyse the totality of primary school curricula;
• collect and analyse school books recommended and used in basic disciplines for the teaching of heritage in primary school;
• collect and analyse secondary school curricula in history, geography, art, music, manual work ;
• collect and analyse the opinions of actors in the formal educational systems (primary and secondary school directors, primary and secondary school teachers, inspectors and associations of pupils parents).
